Now that so many home theater enthusiasts are investing is new gear with 3D capabilities, the question is: Where are the new Blu-ray 3D movies? It doesn’t look like very many movies in this format will be available in 2010.
We see evidence that many popular 3D movies will be released in Germany and Japan with no announcements about a North American release. Why? Who knows. It doesn’t make sense to us either.
We are quite surprised that the movie studios are not clamoring at the opportunity to sell as many Blu-ray 3D movies as they can and as soon as they can. Perhaps they are waiting to test the compatibility with a range of new 3D-ready Blu-ray players so that they can avoid some of the compatibility issues that we saw with the first generation of standard Blu-ray players.
We also see a few movies that have been produced in Blu-ray 3D, but are only currently available through manufacturer’s promotions, such as the Panasonic bundle that contains Coraline and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Panasonic has an additional lock on Avatar through their Ultimate 3D Starter Kit. Also, the Samsung Starter Kit contains Monsters vs. Aliens. Some of these 3D movies are being separated from the bundles and are currently sold through resellers at premium prices.
Keep in mind that when you are ordering 3-D movies, there is a difference between Blu-ray in 3D and Blu-ray 3D. Blu-ray in 3D likely refers to anaglyph 3-D versions of the movies, while Blu-ray 3D is the official designation for the new 3D technology for 3D-ready HDTVs and Blu-ray 3D players. Look for the official Blu-ray 3D logos (shown on left) to make sure that you are purchasing the correct format. If the package does not have one of these logos, it is not a Blu-ray 3D version of the movie.
