Tru3D is offering a 3D upgrade kit for certain models of Samsung’s 3D-ready DLP (rear projection) HDTVs. This is good news for anyone who purchased these models, because they will not have to purchase a new HDTV in order to enjoy the new Blu-ray 3D technology.
The kit is moderately priced with a suggested retail price of $319. When we looked at the Tru3D site, they were, and may still be, offering the 3D TV Adapter KIT for Samsung 3D DLP HDTVs at a reduced price of $289.99. Visit the Tru3D site to see a list of compatible Samsung DLP models and to purchase the adapter kit.
The adapter kits does not include shutter glasses, which may make the upgrade kit seem expensive, but not as expensive as purchasing an entirely new 3D ready HDTV that meets the current standards. Make sure that any shutter glasses that you purchase are compatible with Samsung technology. There are differences among the ways that different HDTV manufacturers interface with shutter glasses and some incompatibility issues have arisen. Samsung compatible models of shutter glasses should have a DLP Link certification.
The kit uses a Mitsubishi 3Da-1 3D adapter already offered by Mitsubishi, but the kit includes an additional component that allows it to be used with a Samsung DLP HDTV. The compatibility is possible because both Samsung’s 3D DLP HDTVs and Mitsubishi’s 3D DLP HDTVs use a checkerboard input pattern.
You will also need to purchase a Blu-ray 3D player. One interesting limitation is found on the Tru3D product page in the Warranties and Limitations section. Be sure to read that before deciding to purchase the 3D adapter kit. It appears that the adapter kit may not work with Samsung 3D Blu-ray players. They recommend using a Panasonic Blu-ray 3D player, Sony Blu-ray 3D player or a Sony PlayStation 3.
